Celebrating the running culture

Teenduruns Chennai Express 5K (TCE 5K), which brings on a common platform runners from various various groups, will take place on April 24, in the Besant Nagar-Adyar area.

The event is conducted by Shahul Hameed, one of the founding members of Dream Runners and Teenduruns.

“Teenduruns was formed in September 2015 with the objective of mentoring teenagers in long-distance running,” he says.

Around 100 teams from various running groups — Tower Twisters, Anna Nagar Dreamers, ECR Runners, Chromepet Cheetahs, Tambaram Thunderbolts, Vibrant Velachery and Pillar Pacers — are taking part in the run.

According to Hameed, “This is a team relay event. It is mandatory that the first runner has to be a woman and the second runner, a veteran who is aged 40 and above. Anyone can be the third and fourth runner. We have laid such conditions regarding the composition of the teams to ensure that every team has a good chance of winning and believe that the rules could encourage more runners to participate in the event.”

There are two all-family teams and two all-women teams and OMR Dreamers have the maximum number of participation. “There are 10 teams from OMR Dreamers,” adds Hameed.

Nandhi Ashok Kumar, representing Pillar Pacers from Chennai Runners, is participating in the event along with her husband P. Ashok Kumar and children A. Prakruthi and A. Keshav. “As a family we have been running since 2013. This has helped us spend quality time with each other,” says Nandhi, a resident of Ramapuram. The family practises thrice a week. Along with other members of our group, they run from K.K Nagar to Ashok Nagar and at times run for 15 km from K.K Nagar to Marina Beach. Power Puff Girls is an all-women team and they belong to Unleashing Your Inner Strength, a running group from Besant Nagar. One of the members, Parvathi, a resident of Valmiki Nagar, who is into running since January this year, says “For beginners like me, such 5k runs could be encouraging.”
